Skip to content. During your pregnancy you will usually have between seven and ten antenatal appointments depending on whether it is your first pregnancy. Women with complicated pregnancies or who are expecting multiple babies may need additional appointments.

Your Midwife will discuss an individual plan of care with you and, once you have with your Midwife, they will let you know how to make these arrangements. It is the date from the scan that is used throughout your pregnancy rather than.

It is important that you see a Midwife as early as possible in your pregnancy. Women have their first and longest Antenatal appointment between 6 – 12 weeks of pregnancy with their Midwife. This is called a “booking” visit and involves questions about your health, any illnesses or previous pregnancies. This helps us to see if there may be any possible problems during your pregnancy and allows us to tailor your Antenatal care for your specific needs. At the start of your pregnancy, during your booking visit, your Midwife will make an assessment based on your previous and current medical and pregnancy history.

If you have not had any problems, then the Midwife will state that you are low risk and will be suitable for Midwifery-led care. This means that you will have all of your Antenatal care provided by the Midwife, and you will only need to attend the hospital for routine scan appointments. You will not see an Obstetrician unless a problem arises.

During your pregnancy we will continuously assess you and your baby to ensure that we provide the appropriate care for you and your baby. At or around 36 weeks the Midwife will discuss your birth plan with you and complete a Risk Assessment to check that your pregnancy has been uneventful. If you and the Midwife are happy, then they will state that you are low risk and will give you the contact details for the Midwifery-led Unit to call when you are in labour. If all is well you will stay low risk.

Scans in the first trimester

Dating a pregnancy accurately at the earliest possible time is important. In a normal pregnancy it does not matter what the dates are, but if anything should go wrong it becomes very important as to what treatments may be prescribed. Traditionally the last menstrual period has been used to date a pregnancy, but this may be highly inaccurate. A simple formula is to take the first day of the menstrual period, subtract three months and add one week. For instance, if your period starts on the 5th April, then your estimated due date for delivery is the 12th January.

The dating scan is an ultrasound scan that can be done as early as six weeks after the last period, but the dating scan will be most accurate when done between 8 and 12 weeks gestation.

All women will be offered a dating scan, and an 20 week mid-pregnancy or fetal when people show me scans I’ve thought, ‘I can’t make that out’, and they say, She knew at once something was wrong at her first week scan, when it.

During the course of the pregnancy, every mother should have at least two scans. These help to ensure the pregnancy goes smoothly, and to identify any problems ahead of time. The dating scan is generally the first ultrasound that every mother-to-be will have. While many women will have a good idea of when they had their last menstrual period, another portion will be far less certain.

This can be due to a number of factors, including whether the pregnancy was planned or not, and if the mother often has irregular periods. The scan also gives a due date, which is sometimes a small range of dates due to a difference with your own dating attempt. An accurate due date is crucial so that, in the event of being overdue, your doctor knows whether you are drastically overdue or simply a few days late.

Your doctor will ask you questions about when you had your last menstrual period, and estimate that ovulation occurred 14 days into the cycle, but some mothers may be unsure.

A dating scan is an ultrasound examination which is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy. Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures. Dating scans are usually recommended if there is doubt about the validity of the last menstrual period.

By 6 to 7 weeks gestation the fetus is clearly seen on trans-vaginal ultrasound and the heart beat can be seen at this early stage 90 to beats per minute under 6 to 7 weeks, then to beats per minute as the baby matures. Ultrasounds performed during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy are generally within 3 – 5 days of accuracy. The most accurate time is between 8 and 11 weeks gestation. This is because the fetus is growing so quickly that there is a big difference in size from week to week.

However, the accuracy of the ultrasound examination is always dependent on the skill of the sonographer and the quality of the equipment. The EDD from the early dating scan is used – if the last menstrual period is not known or is unreliable, or the dating scan differs from the last menstrual period dating by more than 5 days. Ultrasound examinations from 12 to 22 weeks are regarded as being within 10 days of accuracy or up to 10 days earlier or 10 days later than the woman’s calculated due date.

It is common to be given a single ‘estimated due date’ EDD which corresponds the point at which it is estimated that your pregnancy will have lasted 40 weeks. It may be more helpful to be prepared for you baby arrive some time after 37 weeks, and to focus on 42 weeks as the time by which you have a good chance of having given birth. Many women with longer pregnancies find that everyone is asking whether they have had their baby yet, and that health care workers start to suggest inducing labour.

For some women this will be the right decision, but it is important to know that this is your decision to make. Charting temperature, monitoring mucus, using ovulation test kits and knowing times when you could have conceived, or having conceived by IVF may mean you have your own information about when you became pregnant. There is a tendency for midwives and doctors to talk as though the EDD written in your maternity notes is something definite, rather than an estimate which may or may not be accurate.

In that case, if the EDD is later than it should be that could mean that the birth is delayed unnecessarily. This suggests that in general ultrasound dating is more accurate in predicting the birth date than counting from the last monthly period 1,2 but it is still only an estimate and may not always be accurate.

We wanted to update you about our plans to continue to support you during this very difficult and unsure time. We are now taking bookings 3 weeks ahead due to the uncertainty of this pandemic. We have a link at the bottom of the page to the RCOG who give guidance for pregnancy and Covid for your information — with the current changes to lock-down we are constantly reviewing our scanning policy.

The RCOG guidelines do suggest that there is a slightly increased risk for pregnant women in the third trimester 28 weeks onwards which we take very seriously — we are however beginning to reinstate 4D growth scans to our list of scans we offer from the 4th of July. In keeping with guidance about social distancing, only you and one other can attend the scan at any one time, we are asking for everyone to attend on time and not early for their scan to reduce time waiting in the reception area.

We are asking you where possible to leave children at home — please discuss this with us prior to your appointment. At the end of each scan you will not need to wait around and can leave directly from the scanning room which again reduces time with anyone else waiting in reception. The scanning room is then cleaned before the next patient arrives. Our staff are maintaining a stringent hand washing policy to reduce the risk of transmission.

The overwhelming need to keep your families and ours safe will mean that if you or anyone within your home is displaying any signs of Covid or in self isolation please stay away and we will see you after the 14 day isolation period.
